Some More Musings on skin, focusing on sunscreens

Comments

[this is good]
One thing which I've not paid attention to - sunscreens! Mainly because I'm sensitive to silicones. :(

I doubt there's a silicone-free version...so I really don't know what to do. My body seems okay with zinc, but not the face. Grrrr....

Nevertheless, reading this is great information for me, and I'm going do a little research too, to read up more on sunscreens. :)
Excellent post! Sunscreens are quite important, specially with summer approaching and spending more time outdoors. I've been struggling to find sunscreens that have adequate protection, do not feel greasy and do not break me out.

I can attest on the problem with Avobenzene and mineral makeup. Before heading out to spending a lot of time outdoors, I mixed a bit of my mmu with my sunscreen moisturizer with SPF30. I burnt, and couldn't figure out why, and that is when I started researching more about sunscreen ingredients and their properties.
thanks for sharing this! I'd like to avoid chemical sunscreens as well. I found some in my country but they contain only SPF20 or less. and don't know PDD(I've heard this first time!) at all. mmm I hope you can pick some and let us know :)
Hi Sue! I really hope you find something that works for you.
Hi! We are so lucky to be living in a time with internet :). I think you will like Devita sunscreen if you want to avoid greasiness. i do think devita is more an everyday sunscreen, and am not sure how much time you spend outdoors, but i would definitely go stronger. the problem with going stronger is grease though :(

Hi yucccyo, you should try devita, i think you will like it. i think we have similar coloring and it seems to be doing a pretty good job protecting me (i hardly spend any time in the sun).

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't found Devita yet in Canada, but will keep an eye out, and might get it online. I do want an everyday sunscreen that won't break me out for daily use, when I spend most of my day indoors. I do need a more hardcore sunscreen for hiking trips, but I can put up with the annoying feeling then. It's actually hard to find unscented high SPF sunscreen, chemical or not.
It is annoying how companies scent products. since ditching tradition skin care and going the natural route, i really do get annoyed when some skin cream smells like body perfume! The devita is scentless. amazon carries it and you should check for a retailer in Canada too.
Yes, it is quite annoying how almost everything is heavily scented. I find it particularly upsetting in products like sunscreen, which you are supposed to use outdoors. Outdoors as in hiking out in the woods and trying to keep scents to the minimum to avoid grizzlies.
Excellent post Kristen. I do have one question though, are you using the Devita Sun Protection in conjunction with Mineral Makeup, if so how are you liking it? Do you still burn when out in the sun also is it greasy? Thanks!

Hi Michelle,

Yes, i am still using Devita SS either underneath or my premix with my cory foundation in a jar. it is amazing both ways and not greasy at all. the devita is like a gel cream but dries like a gel yet doesn't leave the face tight. i never burn when i am in the sun but then i don't really get much sun exposure except when i am driving, but i don't see any more new freckles like i got when i used Anthelios. i am certain anyone who tries the devita will love it unless you're allergic to it. HTH!

Kris

Thanks for responding Kristen. Actually i'm on the hunt for both a Facial and Body Sun Protector. Presently i'm using Aubrey Organics Green Tea and it's OK but i would love to try something better. The only major concern i have is the use of micronized zinc oxide. I guess i might have to do a bit more research on this. I wish companies stated the micron size of the zinc which would make it much easier for customers like myself;( I really like the idea of being protected both ways UVA & UVB but at the same time i'm concerned about the zinc being absorbed into the blood. Know what i mean? Nano technology is driving me crazy...lol

Hi Michelle,

I totally understand your concern about micronized ZiO but i think the study you alluded to regarding absorption into the blood concerned the dangers of micronized titanium dioxide. From my memory, the risk for both has more to do with inhalation of the micro particles but if the nano particles were used in liquid form then there was little concern.

I'm completely going from memory with this post, but if you find something that strongly suggests otherwise, please let me know.

The Devita Solar Body Block is great for the face and body, i love it and the price is perfect for a 6 oz that i can be super generous with all over application :)
